Inspiration Comes As Standard

At The Boardroom Network, we seek to showcase expertise, provide support, and facilitate connection, but increasingly it seems ‘inspiration comes as standard’.

We relish our whole group gathering, our small group discussions facilitated by such experienced table-ambassadors, and our surprising one-to-ones (randomly selected by Zoom’s mysterious inner-workings – everything else we control!)  However, our members rightly expect to hear experts share practical content on relevant topics.This week, the members came up trumps again (not Trump again) with three practical presentations:

  • Kendal Heron on mastering the secrets big brands use to engage their customers
  • Sam Dyer on coaching us through to great productivity and the realisation of our latent potential.
  • Andy Taylor-Whyte on the 400-second succinct structure for presentations called PechaKucha.

Let’s explore their content one by one.

Building Strong Brand Relationships – with Kendal Heron

Kendal shared the strategy that is core to companies such as Nike, Virgin and GOOGLE that is key to the ability to connect with their ideal clients and drive their business forward.

She also gave us a really valuable insight on how to identify your ideal client and the importance of doing so.

Creating Change for Good

Staying with the Business for Good and Good for Business themes, our regular Host of TBN Online, Sam Dyer shared some good coaching sense.

We wouldn’t go skiing or paragliding without training, would we?  In fact, we wouldn’t learn to drive by picking it up as we went along either.

Great coaching empowers business people to exponentially grow their business. Reading books and taking courses can still leave us behind the place we would prefer to be, but why is this?

  1. Lack of confidence
  2. Limiting beliefs
  3. Unresourceful habits or behaviour that we keep doing.

Lack of Confidence

You are most likely be confident in one area of your life. It’s a state of mind that we can take and apply to another area of your life. It’s a transferable ability and state.

Limiting Beliefs

“I can’t do it.” Any kind of inner-talk that hold us back and ‘limit’ us. In coaching, we replace that limiting belief with an empowering belief. Sam’s exciting activities, including firewalking, walking on broken glass, snapping arrows with your neck – all these can be used to breakthrough to new levels of empowering beliefs.

Unresourceful Habits or Behaviours

We all have habits and strategies that can hold us back. We’ve practised them so we can get very good and not getting what we think we want. However, every habit has a ‘secondary gain’ – giving you a result you want at a deeper level. Good coaching helps you uncover that ‘secondary gain’ and find a more positive way to achieve that result.

Change takes time. It can take between 18-264 days to create a new habit or change an old one. If you’ve been practising an old habit for 10 years, let’s have realistic expectations around how long it takes to retrain your brain. We make about 35,000 decisions a day, that’s 2000 every waking hour. To do this, you must use your unconscious mind. You trust your unconscious mind to do this – to help you survive. Thus the unconscious needs to be retrained to make better empowering choices.

Clarity, Brevity, and Impact – PechaKucha

Andy Taylor-Whyte, an expert in presentation skills, confessed how he still can feel nervous even now.

Having a powerful structure can tap into what I call ‘distributed confidence’. In other words, something outside of ourselves can give us confidence. This might be a supporter in the audience, a warm audience full of fans who want you to win, or a group of friends (like a military unit) who all have confidence in one another because, “I’ve got your back.”

Beyond human support, you can also have a supportive structure. Having a proven structure is a great inspirer of confidence, and PechaKucha is one such well-established technique for creating winning presentations. Andy modelled the technique to make his presentation.

The rigid rules are really helpful:

  • 20 visually rich slides (few words, ideally none)
  • 20 seconds each

The idea grew from what the creators say was a, “…yearning for ‘More show. Less tell.'”

The slides move on (automatically) every 20 seconds, so you benefit from rehearsal, rehearsal, rehearsal. Rehearsal breeds confidence alongside competence.

What are the benefits?

  • Firstly, you feel confident in your material and in the medium you are using to get your message across.
  • Secondly, your audience feels comfortable because they know that they know that they know that the presentation is only ever going to be 400 seconds long – that’s 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

PechaKucha is Japanese for “Chit Chat” though its origin is only partially Japanese – two Tokyo-based architects in fact! (Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham.)

It is now a worldwide movement attracting a massive fan-base.

Launched in 2003, their slogan is wonderful, “PechaKucha – Inspire the World.” Andy’s own “Inspirational Moment” that changed everything was visiting South Georgia – halfway between Argentina and Antarctica – during his service in the Navy. For Andy, it was the most beautiful place he’d ever seen, and the moment that he realised he had to control his own destiny. The first step into a new autonomy was training RNLI Lifeboat crews throughout the South West of England and the Channel Islands. Success led to a posting to the USA as an ambassador for the RNLI to the US Coast Guard for two years.

The next jump was to the Charity world, where Andy has become an expert fundraiser.

Andy’s big question is, “What’s in your tin?”
